My name is Zach. I am an addict. I am addicted to pushing my limits. I am addicted to that feeling of accomplishment achieved when you set an insane personal goal and then crush it. My preferred drug is ultrarunning. It all started for me in 2008 with six weeks of training for a sprint triathlon and a finish much faster than I was expecting. From this point on it was snowball rolling down a mountain including plenty of successes (and some epic failures) along the way! Running for me started as a means to quit smoking cigarettes. I had run in the Army when forced – but NEVER for entertainment. Once I started an office job and started getting fat, I decided it was a good substitute for my morning cigarette. I don’t know if you have tried, but it is hard to smoke when you are running. Talk about escalating quickly! What started as a way to “kick the habit” quickly turned into a completed marathon in 2009. Since then I have run countless races, marathons, 50K trail races, a 50 mile run, 100k trail run, and even 60 some miles in a failed 100 mile attempt. I have paced other runners to help them meet their goals. Mostly I have loved every minute of it – even the miserable, painful, emotionally draining minutes where the desire to finish is just a hair above the desire to quit. I am a good example of the idea that anyone can be an ultra runner. If I can do it, I am convinced that everyone can - All you have to do is willing to work for it as hard as you want it.
