Featured Runner “Brian Scantlin” October 2019

Brian Scantlin (in his own words): What am I, who am I? I am a husband of 20 plus years. A father of four. A Kansan. I left home at 16, because I could not follow the rules. I bounced around from coast to coast for 4-5 years, loosely following the Grateful Dead. Then real life came calling…now I run ultras. Correction, we run ultras. My crew (sister Mandy, daughter Angeline, wife Tawny) and main pacer Chris Greer are there every foot fall along the way. We run ultras. Tawny is to blame for getting me started running. She signed up for a 5k, then another. Then she signed up for a half marathon, and I thought that was just plain crazy. Crazy enough that I am quoted as saying, “I will never be a long distance runner.” However, I then found it inspiring! We completed a couple of half marathons and decided to sign up for a full marathon. In the meantime, I somehow found out about Wyco and trail running and 50k’s. Needless to say, I DNF’d my first 50k, before I ever ran my first marathon. Even with this failure, I was hooked on trails and eventually completed two Psycho Psummer 50k’s. It was around this time we met Chris and learned of his quest for multiple 100 milers, and what do you know…down the rabbit hole we went. Now we sign up for races with a high probability of failure and see if we can come out the other side!
