Featured Runner “Shannon Aldridge” August 2018

Shannon Aldridge (in his own words): I had run my whole life until 1994, when I stopped after the birth of my daughter, Sahara…and I got fat. In 2006, Sahara was diagnosed with a deadly brain tumor. One night on the phone, while she was in treatment in Houston and I was home alone, she told me to just go run, and I did. I couldn’t even complete one mile. The next night, Sahara asked me how it went, and I said not very well, but I’m going to go back out again. At that moment, running became my therapy. I went from a man who couldn’t run one mile to a man who has run 100 miles (twice).

Four out of the last six years, I’ve run over 2000 miles. I run for anyone and everyone that cancer has touched. In a lot of race photos, you will see me running with the number 21. That was Sahara’s number, not mine. When I first got back into running, a lot of local runners helped me. I try to pass along the same knowledge that was given to me, and hopefully it can help someone achieve their dream.  My nickname is THE RISING FORCE, and my battle cry is “RISE TO IT.”
